Why Regulation Comes Before Renewal
True renewal doesn’t begin with change, it begins with feeling safe enough to slow down.
Emotions are integral to the human experience, shaping our reactions, decisions, and overall wellbeing. How does this correlation with regulation bring us to renewal?
Because it all starts with emotions. Emotional regulation refers to the ability to influence which emotions we feel, when we feel them, and how we express or experience them. Once we start recognizing those emotions and understanding that we do in fact have influence over them, that’s when we can start calling in regulation that helps us feel steady, present, and supported.
create safety before growth. Tend to the root, so the tree is stable.
Regulation is the foundation of our retreats. Before movement, before connection, and before growth. We want to ensure we’ve created a safe space for you to tune in. Every night at our retreats, we host yin yoga. Yin yoga is a practice designed to help you feel supported, and softened.
It’s also one of our favorite ways to regulate our physical body, and mental energy as it lets you slow down completely. This has been a staple of our retreats and continues to be a fan favorite.
Why does any of this matter, anyways? Regulation, is this aspect, helps people notice and manage their emotional responses before moving into renewal or growth activities like introspection, connection, or creative exploration.
And, there's good news here!
You can learn to re-learn regulation.
To help with your thoughts, and your emotions.
May we introduce you to…
The ABCD of Self-Talk
When you find yourself spiraling (hi, we are you too), or maybe you’ve had a bad conversation with a friend or co-worker, you begin to notice emotions shifting and clarity leaving. That’s when we come to the ABCD of Self-Talk.
A – Awareness
Notice the inner dialogue. What are you telling yourself right now? “I’ll never finish this,” “They’ll think I’m not good enough,” or “I can’t handle this”? Awareness interrupts automatic thought loops.
B – Breath
Before trying to change the thought, slow down your breath. Regulation starts in the body; breathing signals safety to your brain.
C – Challenge with Compassion
Gently question your thoughts. Is this 100% true? What else could be true? Challenge doesn’t mean confrontation—it means curiosity with kindness.
D – Define an Action
Decide one small thing you can do next. When you translate emotion into action, you shift from rumination to momentum
Now that you have an outline that not only helps you notice your inner dialogue, but navigate your thoughts and experiences, it’s time to practice! This isn’t a space to rush progress. We sit within, take what we need, and grow from each and every stepping stone we find.
Our retreat like The Pause (attach it) and our upcoming retreat Deep Presence intentionally, and thoughtfully helps you create spaces to help notice, navigate, and strengthen your relationship with your inner dialogue. Especially for those craving deeper rest and support, our retreats are created as places where your nervous system can arrive before anything else is asked of you.
At Rooted Renewal, we believe grounding precedes growth. These regulation practices create the space, safety, and self-awareness necessary to engage in deeper healing, connection, and renewal during retreat experiences like yoga, breathwork, and community circles.
Pause & Reframe
Take three intentional breaths when emotions feel heavy. After inhaling and exhaling slowly, say a simple reframe such as:
“I am safe right now.”
“I can meet this moment with curiosity.”
This will support a calm nervous system, increase emotional clarity, and better readiness for deeper retreat offerings.
rooted reflection
“What is one challenging thought I can gently reframe into something that feels more compassionate?”
