Why Savasana Is Important

Let’s be honest — when the instructor says “Savasana,” some of us mentally check out.

Others are already thinking about what’s for dinner. But here’s the thing: that quiet five to ten minutes at the end of class? It might just be the most important part of your entire practice.

Savasana, or "corpse pose," is where your body actually absorbs all the work you just did. It’s like hitting save after writing a long paper — without it, all that effort kind of floats off into the void. Physically, it allows your muscles to fully relax, your nervous system to reset, and your heart rate to return to baseline. Mentally, it's a chance to just be — without movement, without striving, without checking your phone.

At Rooted Renewal Wellness Retreats, we pride ourselves on extra long savasanas during our classes, and we encourage you to find a savasana like state during our Sacred Silence, which takes place daily at our retreats.

In a world that celebrates hustle and grind, Savasana is a radical act of rest. It’s where the magic of yoga really lands. So next time you’re tempted to roll up your mat early — stay. Breathe. Be still. You’ve earned it.

Remember… we’re living in a world, in a society that celebrates the fast pace. We're living in a world that wants to do MORE with your time, not less. We personally think we all need to do a bit less sometimes..

Check out below three really important benefits from embracing a longer, deeper, savasana rest.

mental benefits

The obvious, numerous mental benefits. Whether this is in the morning, to set the tone for your day (or your retreat) or during the evening to really wind down and let the day go. Savasana asks you to find moments of stillness and in those moments you are helping to recharge and rejuvenate the mind and body. By consciously surrendering to still and silence, you build ways to cultivate mindfulness and inner awareness.

You foster a sense of peace and tranquility within.

Better Sleep

Savasana improves your sleep! Think about it. By encouraging deep relaxation, Savasana can ease insomnia and promote more restful sleep patterns.

Better sleep leads to better everything!

Check out our blog on Nervous System Regulation, and how that can help you find deep rest!

Lower blood pressure & heart rate

Want a lower heart rate and lower blood pressure? These two things that affect a significant portion of the U.S. By encouraging deep rest, lying in stillness, or sanasana, you regulate your heart rate and blood pressure, making it great for cardiovascular health

So, the next time you thinking about skipping savasana, or feel guilty for finding rest among the chaos, remind yourself this is exactly what your mind and your body need.
